Reversible Straight Talk

[Politics on my mind: the last three entries have been on that subject. This was was sent to the Waterbury (CT) Republican American and published in their Letters to the Editor area on September 17. Not everyone gets the RA, so it seemed worth republishing here.]

“Change is coming” says John McCain. And surely it will be if he is elected because we have seen it happening. This is the man who:
– was against drilling in the Gulf until he was for it,
– who was opposed to American use of torture until he decided it was OK after all,
– who called some of the leading evangelical preachers “apostles of discord” until he realized he needed their support,
– who opposed the Bush tax breaks for the wealthy until he supported them and voted to make them permanent,
– who is going to change Washington after being part of it for 26 years because he saw that Americans want change from the Bush policies he had previously supported.
He calls himself a maverick. The word means someone whose owner is unknown; you don’t know who they belong to. That’s John McCain. He belongs to whoever will make him president but he doesn’t belong to us nor can we tell by what he says today what he will do tomorrow.
Doesn’t it frighten you to think of such a man as President?
There are lots of us who once admired John McCain as a man of integrity even though we sometimes disagreed with him. Not any more. He has sold his integrity for a pot of evangelical votes. But those who are now rallying to his support should be careful. This “straight talk express” runs both ways on the track and those who are behind him today may be run over tomorrow.
